The City Clerk’s office was deserted, which pretty much made the whole experience magical in my opinion.

Adrian hates waiting in lines even more than I used to. Even though I usually feel pretty zen about it (when I remember to wear my big girl spiritual panties), when there’s no line it’s still freaking blissful.

Big, bam, boom. Licensed to marry.

Well, that was quick.

Quick after months of planning, visa paperwork, waiting, etcetera.

And it got me thinking.

The act of marriage is one day. Or in our case one ceremony and two celebrations spread out over the course of two years.

It’s what a lot of society pins as the pinnacle of love and partnership, the act of committing to spend your life with another person.

And while the ritual itself is important, any ritual is only as good as how you uphold it.

The decision to lose weight, start a business, workout, eat healthier, or any number of decisions you could make, are all the beginning, just like the decision to get engaged was the beginning.

Then there is some sort of ritual we go through, to mark the act itself.

For Adrian and my relationship, that will be our wedding ceremony.

For your health or life decision, it could be joining a gym, or hiring a health coach, or planning a Sunday meal prep.

The thing is, for a lot of people, the “work” (and fun) stops there.

But the ritual by itself is meaningless without the consistent commitment and follow through.

If I get married in a week and then never speak with Adrian again – that would mean the end of our marriage.

If you decide to make healthier choices and then never follow through with those plans – that means the end of a healthier, happier you.

Make your decision and go through with your ritual. Decisions and rituals are the first steps, and they’re super important.

But don’t leave it there.

Make the decision to honor yourself and your health every single day.

Keep up with that ritual.

In love, guts & follow through,

Laura
